Ahoy, hello! My name is Jenny. I am a thirty-something human female from Manchester in the north of England. I enjoy rainy days and sad songs, custard donuts and salt & pepper chips and beer, lentil dhal and fried okra, X-Files and Twin Peaks, fierce fat heroines and mental health advocates, dogs and cats and otters and a very special beirdo. To paraphrase Sylvia Plath: "I blog because there is a voice within me that insists on writing lots of ridiculous chuff".

HEY YOU GUYS. So, I’m trying out something a little new here. I come across so many great links online (even now I’ve quit Facebook) and I wanted to start sharing and logging them somehow. These range from the super sad and/or serious, to cute things, crafty things, human/animal (anthrozoology) things and more. Let me know what you think!

To add to this, I’m throwing in some of my weekend eats. I made baked oatmeal for the first time ever and it was super. A really great way to make a lazy oat-based breakfast if you don’t have a microwave!

I’m trying to put more fresh/whole foods in my body as well as I continue to periodically struggle with some gastro type symptoms. Along with knocking back super strong probiotics daily, this seems to be helping me battle the bloat a bit. My Sunday lunch was a whopper of a salad with chili tofu and SEEDS (behold my vegan brownie points….)

  1. Those oats look lovely! How do you make them? I look at recipes and get put off because they all use so much applesauce and I never have applesauce 😀

    1. Thanks! 🙂 I used 1 and 1/3 cup of fat rolled oats, 1 cup soy milk, 1 cup hemp milk, a big ol’ glug of maple syrup, a shake of cinnamon and nutmeg and then stirred in some almond butter (but you could use PB!) You could also sprinkle in some sugar if you like it sweeter. Then I mixed it all together, put it in an oven dish and baked it for around 20 minutes (I think this depends on the depth of your oven dish and how much you’re making!)

      I’d never have apple sauce ~to hand~ either, to be honest! For sweetness I don’t think a sprinkle of sugar or syrup will hurt too much 🙂

  2. I noticed you haven’t been on the VWPA Facebook page lately. Thanks for all the links. I read the tickling apes article before hand and I thought it was really interesting. I think there are lots of scientists showing dissatisfaction with the currently views on animals and emotions. Hopefully it will make a lasting impression, because animals might not think just like humans, but we shouldn’t try and steer away from such emotionally trigger words when talking about them in the scientific field.

    1. Aww yes I do miss some of the communities on Facebook but overall I’m glad I made the choice to let it go!

      There’s an interesting bit about consciousness in the ‘Vegan?’ page of this blog. Attitudes are changing ~somewhat~ but there’s a long way to go. Frans Waal is an established cultural primatologist and it’s amazing to see a piece of his in a mainstream newspaper. I’m studying a Master’s degree in Anthrozoology so it’s all super relevant to me. I really hope to see a paradigm shift in my lifetime!

      1. What an exciting degree! I am a big biology nerd but I shyed away from it because when I was high school deciding to go to college I was struck more by the creative but than the science bug. Oh yeah, I also was super indoorsy so I figured more biology majors would involve poop and being in the great outdoors. Sucks since I now know there are so many jobs that don’t involve actually interacting with animals (such as dealing with fossils, and the like)
