Flat granny stitch cardigan

I’ve talked before about my love of the Sirdar jewelspun aran range (see my mittens and wrap). The latest colour I tried out was evening jade, a beautiful blend of greens, blues, and purples.

Isn’t she beautiful? I bought four skeins and finally put them to work recently. Life has been awfully tense lately and so I decided to try to knock out a simple flat granny stitch cardigan. As an advanced beginner sewist, I feel very comfortable making flat panels and sewing them together, so I decided to go for flat panels and a boxy fit.

I did not plan this project well! I didn’t keep a note of the number of stitches in my starting chains and measured around 85% in vibes and 15% with a tape measure and a variety of existing cardigans in my wardrobe. I don’t recommend this method and won’t do it again. It’s too long, the sleeves are too long and slightly too narrow, and one front panel is a wee bit wonky. However, I absolutely love the finished product. It’s meant to be somewhat shapeless, the colours override any structural imperfections (in my opinion) and it’s hecking cosy.

I think I’m going to love the jewelspun aran range forever. The colours are beautiful and it’s a perfect yarn weight for me, lovely and cosy with a pleasing little halo (oh, just like me).

I will plan and measure out my next cardigan project much more carefully!
