BBQ Jackfruit, Winter, and lots of dog hugs

Ahoy, hello! My name is Jenny. I am a thirty-something human female from Manchester in the north of England. I enjoy rainy days and sad songs, custard donuts and salt & pepper chips and beer, lentil dhal and fried okra, X-Files and Twin Peaks, fierce fat heroines and mental health advocates, dogs and cats and otters and a very special beirdo. To paraphrase Sylvia Plath: "I blog because there is a voice within me that insists on writing lots of ridiculous chuff".

Since our little old lady Miaowski left us just under a week ago, it has been a bit of a sombre few days. Coupled with an exceptionally intense and busy week at the office, my brain has more or less switched back a few gears into emergency power mode….. I think that a bad case of the blues has quelled my appetite a wee bit as well, but I did want to share my first proper go at BBQ ‘pulled pork’ jackfruit, which was super tasty.

We had a little visit to Lily’s a couple of weeks ago and I managed to snag two jars of jackfruit at only 90p each in the supermarket next door. I took my lead from this recipe by the Minimalist Baker, making my own (vegan version) BBQ sauce, which was super duper easy. I think next time I’d like to add some tamarind to the sauce, and I also used a teeny bit of molasses too. I made a really basic slaw using chopped red and white cabbage and some mayo.

I’m definitely off to buy 372 cans of jackfruit the next time we swing by Lily’s because this was super tasty; definitely one for the slow cooker next time we have folks round for dinner.

I mentioned just over a week ago that I was planning a trip to Sheffield to get tattooed by the lovely Harriet Heath. Harriet gave me the most wonderful, perfect portrait of my beloved little pooch <3

Vulpe has been a bit clueless about Miaowski’s disappearance this last week I think. She’s noticed Miaowski’s food bowl has gone, and with it her chance to steal kibble. But she has been generous with her cuddles, and since winter also arrived, she’s been keeping toasty warm with me under the blanket a lot…..

With all that happened in the past week, and my brain mushed verily into a fine mush, I forgot to order the usual Mothers’ Day freesias for my Mum. I was chastised by at least one florist for not making an order in advance, and being as I’ve managed to obtain freesias every Mothers’ Day for the past 15 years or so, I very nearly gave her a full run-down of why exactly I’d not managed to get my brain in gear this year. But blessedly for her, I just stomped off home in a bad mood instead, which I then slept off before I got to work on a replacement…..

In all I was a bit defeated by last week, and didn’t quite get the relaxing weekend I hoped for, mostly giving in to curling up under a blanket in bed/on the sofa during any spare moments, but I’m hoping that work stresses will ease off this week and I can get back to the business of being a Functional Grown Up again.

We’re still getting used to the lack of a Miaowski around the house. This mostly manifests itself in the complete absence of stray poops, or the small lake of wee next to the litter tray, or finding an elderly cat has pulled your towel off the radiator to use it as a bed. I sure hope Miaowski has all the roaring fires and toasty radiators she can handle wherever she is now <3

    1. Thank you! I frame a lot of stuff in hoops these days; I just back them with some fabric or felt and hang with a ribbon 🙂
