“We have lived a long time here in the forest
We lie beneath the heaps of leaves
We are partial to this partial light
We cannot sleep and fear our dreams
There is no order here, nothing can be planned
We are fireflies trapped in a little boy’s hand
And everything is as distant as the stars
I am here and you are where you are” (x)
Are you enjoying Autumn, friends? Those subscribed to my mailing list will know how much more at home I feel when the leaves get a little crispier and the mornings a little brisker, and also had a sneak preview of my mid-October round-up of seasonal links (as well as some life updates). If you’d like to subscribe, there should be an obnoxious pop-up around here somewhere.
After a few months of emotional decompression, nesting, and thinking about what on earth my life’s really all about, I’m getting a wee bit of the creative spirit back, I guess. I still haven’t the faintest idea about my higher purpose but I’m enjoying making soup and pumpkin-spice tea loaf and all that good stuff.
This morning (sunday!!!) I woke up at 5.30am, had me a hot shower, took Vulpe out for a wee walkie, brewed a coffee and loaded up my keep-cup, and then hopped on my bike and cycled for an hour in the Rather Cold Weather so that I could sit next to a reservoir and watch the sun come up. I miss sundays out. I miss tramping about in my wellies in forests and hot tea in manor house tea rooms. Is there anyone who’d like to take me on a sunday drive? Or a winter log cabin hot tub holiday?
Vulpe’s been an exceptionally good snuggle partner as the evenings have been getting a little chillier. We even had a weekend visit from Vulpe’s pal Gadget, a wee bundle of snorting, snuffling love.
I’ve recently been immersed most cathartically in the achingly, devastatingly beautiful new album from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Ghosteen) a very powerful meditation on loss and grief, and possibly their most emotionally wrenching yet (move aside, The Boatman’s Call, as there is loss worse than lost love).
But back to autumn….. And to this little round-up of predominantly pumpkin-based recipes that have popped up of late. I’m also cooking up some hearty autumn-time recipes in the coming weeks and am planning to get back to some good ol’ bogstandard blogging, my usual nonsense, whatever my heart desires. In the meantime I hope you enjoy this fine selection of recipes and craft ideas as the nights draw in…
