Ahoy, hello! My name is Jenny. I am a thirty-something human female from Manchester in the north of England. I enjoy rainy days and sad songs, custard donuts and salt & pepper chips and beer, lentil dhal and fried okra, X-Files and Twin Peaks, fierce fat heroines and mental health advocates, dogs and cats and otters and a very special beirdo. To paraphrase Sylvia Plath: "I blog because there is a voice within me that insists on writing lots of ridiculous chuff".

Ahoy ahoy m’vegan chums, how was your weekend?

Ours was, for the most part, pleasantly lazy. I am experiencing ongoing broadband anxiety as I struggle to get BT to acknowledge that download speeds of less than 3mbps are NOT REALLY ACCEPTABLE in 2016 because I <3 the internet so, but we kept busy with making a nice dinner for a friend on Saturday night.

Taking inspiration from a recipe in my favourite Indian food, Prashad, I slow cooked these potatoes with tomatoes, red chillis, and a fried mixture of garlic, ginger, mustard seeds and some spices.


For this jackfruit curry I used a super recipe from Vegan Richa, using some lovely fresh plum tomatoes from our local grocers.

C prepared tofu with the MOST AMAZING PEANUT SAUCE EVER from Isa Does It. We stirred in some whole roasted peanuts too.


I used a simple recipe found online for this coconut dhal.

I also cooked some basmati rice with a little turmeric and a few cloves, and served it all up with some giant flat breads, again from our local grocer (which has an amazing selection of spices and sauces and all sorts of splendid Indian and Caribbean goodies).

All in all, a very pleasant feast! We otherwise mostly lazed about the place this weekend, aside from a little housework/Uni work/pooch walking and Meeting Mum For Lunch.

    1. We are trying to limit our takeaways at the moment (erm, ok, mostly me) but there’s so much to choose from around our new place. So much yummy choice! We have yet to find a Thai place but we’ll keep looking 🙂

  3. If it makes you feel any better there is something very wrong with my in-laws internet. I guess the company has problem with the fiber optic cables and aren’t fixing it in their neighborhood anytime soon? Something like that. Anyways, I remember trying to print something at their house, and they have REALLY CRAZY NICE COMPUTERS! But the internet was so bad gmail wouldn’t open up because there was too much information to load (over the time of like 10 minutes)

    1. Ugh yes it is double frustrating with a nice computer. I just got a new iMac and then the internet troubles made me wonder if something was wrong with it! Luckily upgraded now and much better, phew 🙂

  4. Oh wow, what a spread! It all looks so good, I’m not sure what I’d dive into first. That said, I’ve been on a jackfruit kick lately so I’m definitely checking out that curry recipe asap.

    1. The recipe was lovely! I recently had a delicious jackfruit and plantain curry though, and I’m up for trying a ‘creamier’ (less tomato based) jackfruit curry.

  5. Wow, lovely food, what a lucky friend. I am going to put the Vegan Richa book on my Christmas list. I love coconut dahl. I got sent the Tibbits cookbook to review yonks ago and it’s the one recipe I go back to again and again. Insteads of tomatoes theirs has tons of spinach stirred in right at the end. It is such good comfort food.

    1. The Prashad cookbook is great too, though only veggie it has loads of vegan recipes in, but not as many as Vegan Richa. Ughhhh I could eat dhal for every meal almost. Love it so much, definitely the best comfort food!

  6. Hello! New reader/budding vegan here. This spread looked delicious, thanks for posting. Can I just ask where you bought your jackfruit from? I live in Chorlton/Whalley Range area.

    1. I got mine from the WH Lung supermarket, under the Tai Pan restaurant, on Upper Brook Street (behind the University of Manchester campus). I think that might be the nearest to Chorlton/Whalley Range; I know Malik Superstores sells ackee but no jackfruit that I’ve seen :/
